Council Tax Support Fund

On 23 December 2022 the government announced that they are providing funding for local authorities to support the most vulnerable households in England. Full guidance from government is available on the GOV.UK website.

There are two elements to this scheme: a mandatory scheme based on government criteria, and a discretionary scheme for local authorities to determine.

  • £55 award for Council Tax Support claimants

Households in receipt of Council Tax Support as of 1 April 2023 will have their Council Tax bill reduced by up to £55.

This is made up of a £25 mandatory award and a £30 discretionary top-up award, and it will show as an additional reduction on your Council Tax bill. Where your Council Tax liability for the 2023/24 financial year is less than £55, the support fund will reduce your bill to £0.

Support of up to £55 will also be made to new Council Tax Support applicants who make claims after 1 April 2023.

The Council reserves the right to end the scheme should the Government funds be exhausted.

  • Support for households experiencing financial hardship

Households who are experiencing severe financial hardship can apply for additional support with their Council Tax if they are in receipt of Council Tax Support and have an outstanding Council Tax balance in respect of the 2023/24 financial year.

Further information about this scheme and how you can apply will be published on this page shortly.
