What is Council Tax Support
Council Tax Support is a means tested Council Tax discount for residents on a low income. It is applied directly to residents’ Council Tax account.
The way we calculate entitlement to the discount depends on whether you are working or pension age.
Since 2013, the council has operated a local scheme for working age residents, replacing the national Council Tax Benefit. Some requirements for the scheme are set by Central Government, however the council must decide the amount of support which can be received and how it is calculated.
Until 2025/26, this scheme has closely mirrored the previous Council Tax Benefit rules however a new simplified scheme has now been designed.
For pension age residents, a national scheme is in place which the council cannot change.
If you are a couple, and only one of you has reached state pension age, your entitlement will be calculated under pension age rules.
