Life beneath our feet: November’s hidden wildlife
November might seem quiet above ground, but beneath the surface, nature is hard at work.
Earthworms tunnel through the soil, dragging down fallen leaves and mixing nutrients. Dung beetles recycle animal droppings, enriching the earth. Sexton beetles - named after the caretakers of graveyards - bury decaying matter so it decomposes without smells.
This unseen workforce keeps our soil healthy and fertile, supporting all other wildlife. Charles Darwin once wrote that worms are “more important than the British Empire” - a reminder of just how vital they are.
Next time you’re walking through one of Test Valley’s green spaces, think of the teeming life below ground. If you spot worms or beetles on the move, especially after rain, let us know - every record helps us understand soil health in Test Valley.
