Furland Farm diversifies opening a new commercial premises with support from council grant
Furland Farm in Sherfield English, which has been in Graham Noble’s family since 1934, has successfully transformed a derelict shed into a new commercial unit, thanks to a Rural England Prosperity Fund grant awarded by Test Valley Borough Council worth up to £25k towards 50% of the costs.
Although historically home to sheep, pigs, and arable farming, the farm shifted its focus to watercress production.
The grant has enabled the farm to diversify and has provided a vital new income stream. Without this grant the conversion would have taken years to accomplish. Graham hopes to convert adjacent sheds into additional units in the future when finances allow.
The newly finished building includes an open-plan office area, a disabled toilet, a standard toilet and shower room, and a small kitchen. The unit has already been leased to Aqua Science, a company specialising in river restoration and management, including the design, engineering, and delivery of complex wetland projects, which will be relocating its operations to the new premises over the next few months.
Graham Noble said, "The grant has enabled us to repurpose an old, redundant barn, unlocking its potential to provide a functional office space for business use within the countryside. This initiative encourages businesses to set up in rural areas, thereby boosting the rural economy. Diversifying in this way alongside our farm business ensures future security, and we are very thankful for the grant provided by the team at Test Valley."
Blackwater ward Councillor Nick Adams-King said, "This project exemplifies the positive impact that targeted grants can have on rural communities. By supporting local businesses and encouraging diversification, we can help ensure the sustainability and growth of our rural economy."
