Slight delay to installation of new Vigo Park play area

We're sorry to have to report a slight delay to the installation of the new play equipment at Vigo Park. When our contractors began digging the foundations for the new playground, they discovered evidence of white asbestos building material buried beneath the surface. As it's white asbestos and it had been completely covered and sealed with soil and surfacing from the previous play park, it has not posed any risk to park users. However, it now needs to be removed safely and securely.

The site is, therefore, fenced off and we are working to get a specialist company out as quickly as possible to remove the building material. They will also check the rest of the site where excavations are taking place to make sure that any further asbestos can be removed straight away to avoid further delays. Once complete, our park contractor will be working at pace to make up for lost time.

This was an unforeseen issue, but are really sorry for the delay this will cause. We will be able to provide more detailed timescales when a contractor is in place, but our aim remains to get the new park open so that children can enjoy it during the summer holidays.
