How do they effect my benefit?
Non-dependants are only considered in relation to Housing Benefit. For information about Council Tax Support, please click here and choose working age or pension.
Unless an exclusion applies, a deduction will be taken from your Housing Benefit based on your non-dependant’s income. For April 2026, the rates are:

The highest deduction may be applied if you do not provide evidence of your non-dependants income when we ask for it.
Married/unmarried couples/civil partners or same sex couples only attract one non-dependant deduction based on their total income.
No deduction will apply if one or more of the following circumstances apply:
