Disagreeing with a Housing Benefit decision
If you think a Housing Benefit decision is wrong, you have the right to ask for it to be looked at again. This page explains what you can do, who can disagree with a decision, what decisions can be challenged, and what happens next.
This page relates only to Housing Benefit. For information about Council Tax Support, please see here.
If you disagree with a Housing Benefit decision, you can:
- ask us to explain the decision in more detail – this is called a statement of reasons
- ask to reconsider the Housing Benefit decision – this is called a reconsideration
- submit an appeal which can progress to an Independent Tribunal
These rights only apply to the Housing Benefit claimant, or their appointee or representative. Landlords cannot usually appeal on behalf of a claimant.
