Advice for householders to help avoid problems with rats and mice
Bins and Waste
Put your household waste, including all food waste, in your black household waste bin. Don’t leave any of your household waste outdoors, in sacks, boxes or any other accessible containers.
Don’t overfill your wheeled bin and always make sure that the lid is fully closed to prevent rats accessing your waste, a potentially very attractive source of food.
Clear up any dog faeces from gardens or patios, as this can attract rats.
Avoid keeping your wheeled bins close to any windows and doors - rats often forage around bins, searching for food. If possible, it’s best to keep your bins out of direct sunlight too. This will help keep the bins cooler, reducing the rate of decomposition, and the potential for smells that might attract rats.
