Man ordered to pay nearly £700 for fly-tipping broken vehicle part at property near Lockerley
A man from Southampton has been ordered to pay a total of £681.15 for fly-tipping a vehicle part, which had broken off, at a property near Lockerley.
Sergio Dias De Oliviera, 47, of Nelson Road, was working as an Amazon delivery driver on 12 September 2021 when he was captured on CCTV removing waste from the boot of his car, before delivering a parcel to a property on Mount Lane.
The waste deposited was an oily undertray from an Audi vehicle, matching the defendant’s vehicle.
He was invited to attend an interview under caution, where he originally claimed he had found the item in the middle of the road and had just moved it to the property for safety reasons.
However, he later admitted he hadn’t found the item and it had actually broken off from his car.
Appearing at Southampton Magistrates’ Court on 6 January 2023, De Oliviera pleaded guilty and was discharged conditionally for 12 months and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £22 and full costs of £659.15.
Portfolio holder for environmental services, Councillor Nick Adams-King, said:
“Every successful prosecution is evidence of the great work our teams are doing to stamp out fly-tipping of any kind across Test Valley. This result is proof that, no matter how big or small the waste is, we will take all incidents seriously. Your waste is always your responsibility and you must dispose of it safely and legally, you cannot dump the problem on someone else.
“This should serve as warning to anyone considering fly-tipping to think again, as it is not worth the consequences. We have many household waste recycling centres across the borough and there are lots of ways to dispose of this kind of waste properly.”
