Funding boost for Horns Drove Community Childcare to create a quiet, sleep and story room

Test Valley Borough Councillors have awarded a £1000 grant to Horns Drove Community Childcare in Rownhams to refurbish its quiet, sleep and story room – a vital space for the wellbeing of the youngest children in its care.

The charity-run preschool, which offers term-time care for children aged two years up to reception age, has seen a significant increase in two-year-olds following changes to government funding. Many of these children need a safe, calming space to rest during the day, but the current facilities are no longer fit for purpose.

The council’s Councillor Community Grant grant helped fund essential upgrades, including blackout blinds, toddler beds, soft carpet, storage, and decorating materials. The room will provide a peaceful environment for more than 45 children to enjoy naps, reading and sensory regulation, supporting emotional wellbeing and inclusive care for children with additional needs.

Julie Meintjes, Director at Horns Drove Community Childcare, said; “This funding means so much to us. The quiet room is essential for supporting our youngest children, giving them a calm space to rest and recharge. It will make a huge difference to their wellbeing and help us provide the best possible care for every child.”

Councillor Terese Swain endorsed the grant, saying; “This project is a fantastic example of how small changes can make a big difference. By creating a dedicated quiet space, Horns Drove Community Childcare is helping children feel safe, calm and ready to learn.”

She added; “Investing in facilities like this strengthens our communities and supports families. We’re proud to help make this happen.”

The total cost of the refurbishment is £2,500, with the charity already raising more than £200 through a JustGiving campaign. Volunteer directors will also contribute labour for decorating, reducing costs and demonstrating strong community involvement.
