Young traders and creative workshops feature at July’s Second Sundays market
Visitors to this weekend’s Second Sundays market in Andover can enjoy a mix of local independent traders, free creative workshops and a special Young Traders market showcasing the next generation of entrepreneurs.
Following the success of last year's Young Traders markets, Test Valley Borough Council is bringing back two events this year, giving young people the chance to showcase their ideas and sell their products in a real market environment. The first takes place this Sunday 12 July on Andover High Street as part of Second Sundays, with a second festive market planned for Sunday 6 December in the Chantry Centre.
Known for its curated mix of independent producers, designers, makers and artisan food traders, Second Sundays has become a popular monthly fixture in the town centre, celebrating local creativity and offering something new to discover with every visit. Adding to the atmosphere is the market's resident vinyl DJ, whose carefully selected soundtrack has become a popular feature, helping to create the relaxed and welcoming feel visitors have come to expect each month.
This month's Young Traders market will feature 11 young entrepreneurs – both new and familiar faces - selling a range of products including jewellery, baked goods, homeware, gifts and sweet treats, with one trader selling desserts from a converted horsebox!
Alongside the market stalls, visitors can take part in two free drop-in creative workshops throughout the day.
Artist Kiri Horikiri White will be leading a collage and monoprinting workshop inspired by her mixed-media practice. Participants can create their own artwork using a variety of materials including magazines, fabric scraps, ribbons, strings, gems, pens and pencils.
Visitors can also try their hand at spray painting with Pop-up Spray Studios. The drop-in workshop includes an introduction to street-art-inspired spray-painting techniques and the safe use of spray paint. There will be a wide range of pre-cut stencils and guidance on control, layering, and effects to help people experiment creatively and build confidence.
Councillor Phil North, leader of Test Valley Borough Council, said: "Last year's Young Traders markets were a real success, giving young people the chance to build confidence, develop new skills and showcase their ideas to the public.
"The Young Traders market is a fantastic extension to this month's Second Sundays event, sitting alongside an excellent line-up of independent traders and free creative activities. It's a great opportunity to support local talent and experience the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit that exists across our community."
The markets will take place on Andover High Street from 10am to 3pm on Sunday 12 July. Entry is free and no booking is required for the workshops.
