New Test Valley baker rises with support from £750 start‑up grant
A new baking business called Jack’s BackHaus has received a £750 business incentive grant from Test Valley Borough Council.
Jack Hammond has set up an online bakery at Grateley Business Park, where he creates small‑batch pastries, cookies and sweet bakes. He began with a simple cookie range and has now expanded into pastries, apple tarts and cinnamon rolls, with plans to introduce breads such as focaccia.
Jack sells online throughout the week and attends local markets on weekends. Over the last year, he has taken his bakes to events including the Hawk Conservancy Christmas Market, Winchester Christmas Market, Andover Lights Switch On, and Stockbridge’s Trout ’n About.
Since launching, Jack has reinvested everything he has earned back into the business, purchasing a van, an upgraded mixer, a new freezer and other essential equipment. He plans to use the £750 grant to buy a branded, more durable gazebo to help him stand out at markets.
Jack said: “I’m grateful for this support from Test Valley Borough Council. It’s been a busy year, and the grant means I can invest in the equipment I need to present the business well at markets.”
Councillor Susanne Hasselmann, Anna ward, said: “It’s great to see new independent businesses like Jack’s growing here in Test Valley. He’s shown real commitment by reinvesting in his equipment and making the most of both local markets and online sales. I’m pleased that the council can support him as he builds on a strong first year.”
Test Valley Borough Council is committed to supporting local businesses through various initiatives and grants. The Business Incentive Grant is designed to help new businesses located in Test Valley achieve their goals and contribute to the local economy. You must apply for the grant within eight weeks of starting to trade, and the council will award the money once you have been up and running for a minimum of six months.
