Communities invited to gather for Andover Remembrance Sunday parade and outdoor service

Residents are invited to join veterans, serving personnel, uniformed groups and local organisations in Andover on Sunday 8 November for the town's annual Remembrance Sunday parade and outdoor service.

The event provides an opportunity for the community to come together to remember and honour those who have served and sacrificed in conflicts past and present.

The parade will set off from Bridge Street and travel through Winchester Street and Eastern Avenue before arriving at St Mary's Church.

In order to be more inclusive, the church will be hosting a single outdoor service for everybody to attend.

The service, led by Rev'd Canon Peter Harwood, will begin at 10.35am and will include the Last Post, 11am Silence and wreath laying. Local schoolchildren will also lay posies of poppies.

Following the act of remembrance, dignitaries will move to Eastern Avenue to salute the returning parade.

Councillor Phil North, Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, said: "Remembrance Sunday is one of the most important dates in our calendar, giving us the opportunity to come together and honour those who have served and sacrificed for our country. It holds particular significance in Andover, a town with strong and longstanding military connections, where many residents have served in the armed forces or have close ties to military life. We encourage everyone who is able to join us in paying their respects and reflecting on the contribution made by so many, both past and present."

To support the event, temporary rolling road closures will be in place on Sunday morning.

From approximately 9.45am to 10.30am, Bridge Street will be closed.

From approximately 9.55am to 10.30am, the following roads will be subject to temporary closures:

  • Western Avenue

  • High Street

  • London Street

  • Winchester Street

  • South Street

  • Eastern Avenue

  • London Road

  • East Street

  • Savoy Close

  • Newbury Street

These temporary closures will be enforced again from approximately 11.30am to 12pm for the return parade.

During these times, George Yard and Black Swan Yard car parks will be inaccessible, while Town Mills car park will have very limited availability. Alternative parking is available at the Chantry Centre multistorey, Shepherds Spring Lane and Anton Mill.

A short Armistice Day service will also take place at the Cenotaph in St Mary's Church Garden on Wednesday 11 November, beginning at 10.50am.
