Could you be Test Valley's next councillor?
Residents interested in making a difference in their community are being invited to attend one of two upcoming "Be a Councillor" events hosted by Test Valley Borough Council.
The free sessions are aimed at people who are not currently councillors but would like to find out more about the role ahead of the local elections in May 2027. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from existing councillors, learn how local councils work and discover how councillors help shape decisions that affect local communities.
The first event will take place at Longstock Village Hall with refreshments at 6pm with a 6:30pm start on Wednesday 28 October, with a second online session taking place on Microsoft Teams at 7pm on Monday 2 November.
People from all backgrounds are encouraged to attend. No previous political experience is needed, and the events will explore how the role can fit around work, family life and other commitments.
Councillor Phil North said: "Being a councillor is one of the most rewarding things I've done. It gives you the opportunity to make a real difference to the place where you live and to help shape decisions that affect local people every day.
"You do not need to be a political expert or have a particular background. What matters most is caring about your community, being willing to listen and wanting to make a positive contribution.
"I would encourage anyone who has ever thought about getting involved in local democracy to come along to one of our events. They are a great opportunity to find out more about the role, ask questions and hear first-hand from people already serving their communities."
Councillor Sandra Gidley added: "People often assume you need a particular background or lots of experience to become a councillor, but that's simply not the case. What councils need is a wide range of people with different skills, experiences and perspectives who care about their communities.
"Being a councillor allows you to have a real influence on local issues and help shape the future of the place where you live. If you've ever wondered whether it's something you could do, I'd encourage you to come along to one of the events, ask questions and find out more."
Anyone interested in attending is asked to reserve a place by emailing bryan@testvalley.gov.uk.
