Apprentice Stories

Liam, Grounds Maintenance Apprentice, Now Grounds Maintenance Operative

Apprentice Liam Hedge Trimming

I started my apprenticeship for Test Valley Borough Council in 2018. I attended college one day a week studying for a level 2 in Horticulture, whilst working with the Grounds Maintenance team in the Environmental Service for the rest of the week. This was a great way for me to utilise my studies and put them into practice. I was supported by my supervisor and colleagues to gain skills and experience working with a variety of powered machinery safely in public’s spaces, including ride on lawn mowers, hedge cutters and strimmer’s. My role also including managing formal flower and shrub beds in and around the Romsey area.

The council is very supportive. It is a satisfying and enjoyable place to work. After my apprenticeship I was employed full time, where I was supported to further my learning and gained an RHS level 3 in Horticulture, this has helped me further develop my knowledge and skills within my role.

I would recommend completing an apprenticeship through the council as it has been an enjoyable and fun learning experience.
