Apprentice Stories
Nicola, Building Control Surveyor (Degree Apprenticeship)

I work in Building Control, Planning & Building Service and have completed the BSc (Hons) Building Control Surveyor (Degree Apprenticeship) which was online based learning through university. My key job responsibilities include enforcing the compliance with Building Regulations for construction work, technical guidance, plan checks and site inspections.
The council is friendly, supportive, fun, provides good opportunities to progress and training provisions, has good teams to work with in your own department as well as others.
I chose to do an apprenticeship as my course was suitable and available for what I wanted to do in a new job role. I gained new skills and knowledge in building regulations and key legislation.
The council supported me with my apprenticeship by allowing me to have the study days for online lectures, time to write the assignments and providing training on the job.
I would recommend apprenticeships to other people as they provide good training opportunities and a chance for qualifications. Now that I have finished my apprenticeship, I will excel at my current job role and the new qualification has allowed me to become a Chartered Member for both CABE and CIOB. I will also still be doing continuous professional development and training as part of the job role and competency requirements.
