Conservation Areas
A conservation area is defined as ‘an area of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance’ Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.
We are responsible for the designation and review of conservation areas. The local authority has a duty to ensure that the character or appearance of a conservation area is preserved or enhanced, when considering applications for development. This includes development which affects the setting of a conservation area.
There are currently 36 designated Conservation Areas within Test Valley. Details of each Conservation Area can be found below.
The Conservation Area Appraisals reflect the legislation and policies which existed at the time of their adoption. If you are intending to undertake development within the Conservation Area you must comply with planning law as it exists at the time work is undertaken. You can check what the most up to date legal position is via the Government’s Planning Portal, or by direct reference to the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) Order The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015. If you require assistance before undertaking work, please contact the Council’s duty planning officer and we will be able to assist you interpreting the law.
